"Music is the medicine of the breaking heart"

Lady Antebellum - Own The Night (Review)

We Owned the Night
“We woke under a blanket all tangled up in skin not knowing in that moment we’d never speak again”
This song is so refreshing. When I first heard it seemed like a weird release time being in the fall because it felt very summery to me but after a few listens I was converted and now it is my ultimate fall jam. It’s a very sexy song and Charles and Hillary’s voices have never sounded better together.

Just a Kiss
“Lying here with you so close to me it’s hard to fight these feelings when it feels so hard to breathe caught up in this moment caught up in your smile”
I love the innocence and vulnerability of this song. The beginning of a relationship is always the tenderest feeling when no one knows whether or not to cross the line between friendship and something more. As with the rest of this record I really think Charles and Hillary finding the perfect sweet spot for their vocals and sound better than ever. I think they are not only maturing individually as artists but as a trio as well.

Dancin’ Away With My Heart
“I can’t help but wonder if you ever miss me I haven’t seen you in ages sometimes I find myself wondering where you are”
I really hope they release this as a single because the lyrics paint a mini-movie and I would love to see a music video. Just by reading the title of the track I pictured a couple dancing and when they twirl apart they each take a piece of the others’ heart. Also, who doesn’t wonder where a past love is from time to time?

Friday Night
“I don’t wanna be another chore you check off of your list of things you gotta do and places that you gotta go”
This song defies the seasonality categorization I usually label songs with and is the perfect song for any weekend getting ready to have a good time with friends. It’s also the perfect for driving around on a warm day with the windows down (I realize that sort of applies a season but whatever). I really like the concept too of describing all of the insignificant things we do throughout the day and saying I don’t want to be that I want to be your favorite thing during the week meaning Friday night.

When You Were Mine
“You promised you’d never break my heart leave me in the dark said you love would be for all time but that was back when you were mine”
I don’t know why but when I listen to this song (meaning sing it in the car) I listen to it as the speaker being shy about the subject. Like I remember all these things and I believed it, but I’m kind of hesitant to ask if you remember it too.

Cold as Stone
“I wish I was cold as stone cause then I wouldn’t feel afraid wish I didn’t have this heart then I wouldn’t know the sting of the rain”
The songwriting on this album just blows me away. This song especially is another really great concept song. It’s also a true duet between Charles and Hillary with them alternating to tell the story rather than just complementing each other like they do on a lot of songs.

Singing Me Home
“My baby’s riding shotgun singing just a little off-key”
Shortest description I will ever give: hot, summer, and driving. That is all.

Wanted You More
All the words unspoken promises broken I cried for so long wasted too much time should have seen the signs now I know just what went wrong”
This may be an inaccurate interpretation of this song but I hear it as almost a emotional revenge song but that you still aren’t over the situation. I guess it’s more anguished yearning but here’s what I have to say about our love. And I could totally see a music video in the rain.

As You Turn Away
“Standing face to face wrapped in your embrace I don’t wanna let you go but you’re already gone”
The simplicity of the musical composition in this song makes it epic. There are so many subtle details that add up to so many great moments. It feels very much like a song in a fairytale.  Beautiful vocals too.

Love I’ve Found in you
well I wonder where I’d be if the Lord hadn’t heard my prayer the one I said every night til’ the day that you got here you showed me how to live and love forever”
This song just puts you in a good mood. It’s great to put on driving with the windows down or just sitting outside on the porch with a cold drink. It’s really simply is just a sweet, happy song.  And it’s hard to put this into quotes for context but I love Charles’s part when the lyrics are basically like my friends are out tonight but I don’t need to do that anymore because I have you and that’s all I need. It’s such a sweet sentiment that isn’t expressed as often as it should be

Somewhere Love Remains
“You don’t have to speak I can see it in your eyes”
The theory that you can see all feelings, emotions, etc. in someone’s eyes has always fascinated me. In a weird way, I can almost hear a little bit of a soul or R&B influences to this song. It’s definitely a country song but there are some subtle touches that sound like a collection of genres. If any contemporary country artist can pull off a sound like that it is Lady Antebellum. The singular sound that these three come together to make is beyond words. They are just far too talented.

Heart of the World
“Love is the heart of the world”
This is such a great song to close this record. It’s so beautiful and really showcases the beauty in their vocals and the arrangement of the song. It reminds me of something Vince Gill would sing or sing backup vocals on for a female artist. Great country song.
